They
are the Gladiators.
It
is the year 46 BC. Gaius Julius Caesar has ruled the vast empire of Rome
for the last 19 years with an iron grip and a bloody sword. Now in
his 20th year in power the turbulence of unhappiness and mistrust is rife
amongst the lower classes of the empire. Corruption and betrayal is rampant
amongst the squabbling senators who treat the plebs with contempt. A revolt
is immanent.
In an attempt to appease his subjects Caesar decides to hold the most
amazing sporting event ever known to man. Gladiators. From the furthest
reaches of the empire, gladiators, slaves and criminals all lead by their
masters flock to the mighty Colosseum.
The beautiful Cleopatra from Egypt has sent a troop of her finest warriors
to compete for her in an attempt to please the powerful Caesar. She hopes
to win his affection and future protection from roaming hoards of barbarians
as well as the Roman Empire itself.
From the dark enchanted forests of Germania have emerged the ferocious
Barbarians intent on revenge against the Romans, who have raped and pillaged
their homeland in an attempt to expand the empire. Now is their chance
to inflict similar pain and suffering upon the Roman gladiators.
Out of the many strict gladiatorial schools in the empire come the most
popular gladiators. They wish to rise up from the dust and blood soaked
arena to confirm themselves as the strongest and most honorable gladiators
in the world.
In this contest of might many men, women, and beasts shall be slaughtered,
only a few will survive. They are the gladiators.
